Hope sermon notes : Untangling Stress

Untangling Stress:

Different things cause stress and we each respond to it

Decision making becomes more difficult.
Increase drugs/smoking
Fear of illness
Thoughts trail off
Outburst of anger
Reversal of typical personality/attitude
All these are signs of stress

What is stress? ……result of carrying to great of a load.

Stress and breakdown are close

Our life with Christ needs to be more than spiritual

1: Check your schedule….

I.e. Overcrowded schedule

A discerning person keeps wisdom in view, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth. (Proverbs 17:24 NIV)

Pain/fatigue/loss of joy
We need to breath:
Don’t add anything to your life without subtracting something.

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12 NIV)

2. Check your finances

Reduce debt:
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. (Proverbs 22:7 NIV)

Increase giving:
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (Proverbs 11:25 NIV)

3:Check your Words:

Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. (Proverbs 16:24 NIV)

Proverbs 15:1
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1 NIV)

Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues. (Proverbs 17:28 NIV)

4: Check your heart
If you keep overloading yourself with stress over and over again
Then we should check our heart.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. (Proverbs 3:7, 8 NIV)

Even Jesus recognized his limitations
Pride is one of the hardest issues for us

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. (Proverbs 14:30 NIV)

Proverbs: 23:4, 26:16

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. (Proverbs 23:4 NIV)

Jesus said:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 NIV)
For some of us this Christmas we don’t need the latest gadget but for Jesus to mend our tangled heart.
